Last week, I went tree planting with my grade! We partnered with an organization called Keep Durham Beautiful. The land was originally donated by John Sprunt Hill. On the opposite side of the park from the Whitted Building was the Algonquin Club. (AL-GON-KWIN) The Algonquin Club was a social club and community center for black residents of Durham. The club hosted tennis tournaments and matches for black tennis players.
After that bit of history, the photo above is of my friends and me while planting the trees. There were 2 groups A and B. We were in A. Unluckily, while B was out it poured, and they came back soaked! My group and I named our tree “Roberta Hornbeam”. It was a hornbeam tree, which explains the name. The process itself was super fun, and we got to massage the roots to loosen them. Anyways, thanks!
